"Physical API for Advanced Manufacturing"
Redwood City startup founded 2025 by CMU roboticists, building a 'physical API' that lets general-purpose robots operate machines and link factory workcells.
Sancho Robotics (branded Sancho) is a manufacturing-automation startup based in the San Francisco Bay Area that builds what it calls a "physical API for manufacturing": an intelligence layer that lets general-purpose robots operate existing machines and carry out the fragmented, manual steps between standalone workcells. The company's stated goal is to connect standalone workcells into continuous workflows, automating the handoffs between production steps that are still commonly done by people; it cites millimeter-scale precision for this work.
Technically, Sancho uses a geometry-first 3D world model and test-time reasoning rather than pixel-based end-to-end vision models. Co-founder and CEO Chao Cao has argued publicly that spatial structure, not raw pixels, is what matters for robot operation in factories. The world model runs entirely on embedded, on-device hardware without cloud dependency, which the company positions as suited to regulated production environments with data-residency requirements. The company has been hiring perception and loco-manipulation engineers, and describes its robots as general-purpose machines that operate existing factory equipment.
Target markets are advanced manufacturing, with early focus on cell therapy, biopharmaceutical manufacturing and semiconductors. Sancho states it signed its first paying customer, a cell therapy facility, in December 2025, and its work with biomanufacturing automation firm Multiply Labs was shown during the opening of NVIDIA's GTC 2026 keynote in March 2026.
Sancho was founded in October 2025 by two Carnegie Mellon University roboticists. Chao Cao holds a robotics PhD from Carnegie Mellon, led autonomy for CMU's team in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge, and spent about 1.5 years as a research scientist at the Boston Dynamics AI Institute. Co-founder Jack Yang was previously a mapping tech lead at Nuro and a founding engineer at Phiar before its acquisition by Google. Its website gives Redwood City, California as its location.
In July 2026 Sancho announced an oversubscribed US$7 million seed round co-led by Fusion Fund and Catapult Ventures; South Park Commons is an early investor.
