SAFE Cluster
SAFE Cluster is an Aix-en-Provence aerospace, security and defence cluster of about 500 members that coordinates regional drone testing.
SAFE Cluster, or Pole SAFE, is the French competitiveness cluster covering aeronautics, space, security and defence. It is headquartered at the Domaine du Petit Arbois in Aix-en-Provence, with further offices at Sophia-Antipolis and at the Technopole de la Mer in Ollioules near Toulon. It was formed from the earlier Pegase (aeronautics) and Risques clusters, and says it has supported 980 projects since their creation. The cluster has about 500 members; around 70% are located in Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, 8% in Ile-de-France and 7% in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, and industrial companies and SMEs form the majority.
Drones are a defined sector within its aeronautics activity. The cluster supports drone testing through a test centre, a U-space zone and experimental lines, and relies on the regional drone resource centre (C2RD). A planned autonomous-systems project would extend C2RD to long-range, maritime, high-altitude, dense urban and indoor testing. In 2018 the cluster reported coordinating about 80 actors across the drone value chain, a Provence RPAS network of five labelled test platforms, participation in the inter-cluster drone committee and in France's civil drone council working groups on identification, testing, urban logistics and UTM, and an international counter-drone seminar at Avignon airport. It also runs the SAFE Drone Day event and reports member news such as drone delivery of health products and counter-drone radar sales.
Services cover innovation project support, competitiveness, networking and European programmes. The cluster is led by president Riadh Cammoun and director general Andre Soulage.
