PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) is a nonprofit industrial-communication standards association headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany, operating since 1989. PI functions as an independent membership organization rather than a commercial vendor, developing and promoting open communication protocols for factory and process automation.
PI's technology portfolio includes PROFIBUS, a serial fieldbus protocol for factory and process automation; PROFINET, its Ethernet-based successor used in discrete manufacturing and supporting Ethernet-APL, single-pair Ethernet, and wireless connectivity; IO-Link, a point-to-point sensor and actuator communication standard; omlox, an open real-time locating system standard; MTP (Module Type Package) for modular process plants; NOA (NAMUR Open Architecture); and SRCI, the Scalable Robot Control Interface. PI provides conformance testing, certification, training, and technical consulting to help device manufacturers and end users implement these standards, which are embedded in international IEC norms.
PI serves more than 1,800 member companies worldwide through more than 20 regional PI associations and a network of test laboratories, training centers, and competence centers. More than 1,000 domain experts contribute to PI's roughly 80 working groups, and the organization states it has certified over 10,000 PROFIBUS and PROFINET specialists to date.
