Massachusetts R&D firm founded 1973; InstantEye division makes hand-launched tactical quadrotor sUAS used by U.S. military and first responders.
Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) was founded in 1973 by Robert F. Weiss and Kurt Wray in Massachusetts, initially focusing on missile defense research and laser-materials interactions for U.S. government programs. Headquartered at 20 New England Business Center, Andover, Massachusetts, PSI provides contract research and development across aerospace, chemical, defense, energy, environmental, manufacturing, and medical domains. The company became fully employee-owned through its ESOP in 2011.
PSI's InstantEye Robotics division, located in Andover, MA, develops and manufactures small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) deployed by military, law enforcement, and first responders worldwide. The flagship product line is the InstantEye Mk-3, a hand-launched, hand-recovered VTOL quadrotor that can be operated by a single person in all weather conditions. The Mk-3 family includes several variants: the GEN5-D1/D2 weighs under 9 oz; the GEN4-D1/D2 weighs 3 lb with up to 3 lb payload; and the GEN4-E1 at 3.5 lb. All variants feature all-digital data communications with encryption, networked military software-defined radio, line-of-sight range up to 1.5 km, and ceiling up to 12,000 ft. Sensor payloads include gimbaled electro-optical (EO)/infrared (IR) cameras and plug-and-play thermal imaging systems for day/night operation. Systems are manufactured at an ISO 9001-certified U.S. facility using domestic components.
Beyond tactical ISR, PSI received NIH funding to develop an autonomous LabHand payload for its InstantEye platform enabling robotic indoor transport of laboratory microplates in High Throughput Screening environments. PSI's broader capabilities include laser systems, detection technology, and advanced sensor development across government and commercial markets.
