Phlux Technology is a semiconductor infrared sensor company headquartered in Sheffield, England, founded in 2020 as a spin-out from the University of Sheffield, based on eight years of university research. It was co-founded by Ben White (CEO), Professor Jo Shien Ng, and Professor Chee Hing Tan. Phlux designs, manufactures, and markets 1550 nm infrared avalanche photodiodes (APDs) under the Aura Noiseless InGaAs brand. The company's patented technology delivers sensors that are up to 12x more sensitive than conventional InGaAs APDs, extending the range and accuracy of infrared systems by up to 50% for a given laser power. The Aura family is available in 30 um, 80 um, and 200 um active-area versions, with the high-speed, high-bandwidth 30 um device suited to gigabit optical communications, free-space optical links, and optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) test equipment. Phlux sensors are used in laser rangefinders, LiDAR systems for robotics and autonomous vehicles, optical fibre test equipment, and free-space optical communications.
The company has built a global supply chain serving customers across Asia, Europe, and North America. Phlux raised a seed round in December 2022 led by Octopus Ventures and a Series A of approximately 10 million euros in 2025 led by BGF and Octopus Ventures, with backing from Northern Gritstone and Foresight Group, and has won the Institute of Physics Business Start-Up Award.
