Phenospex is a Netherlands-based plant phenotyping technology company founded in 2009 by Gregoire Hummel, Philipp Tillmanns, and Uladzimir Zhokhavets, headquartered in Heerlen. The company develops sensor hardware and data analytics software that enable non-destructive, automated measurement of plant traits for agricultural research and crop breeding programs worldwide.
The company's flagship product line is the PlantEye sensor series — multispectral 3D line scanners that combine structured-light 3D imaging with four-channel spectral capture in the 400–900 nm range. The PlantEye F500 delivers high-resolution 3D plant architecture data fused with simultaneous multispectral imaging at the individual point level. The PlantEye F600 extends this capability to field conditions, operating 24/7 in any ambient light environment through active illumination, making it suitable for outdoor plot installations. Both sensors extract over 20 morphological and physiological plant traits — including leaf area index, digital biomass, plant height, and vegetation indices such as NDVI and NDRE — non-destructively in under 30 seconds per plant.
Phenospex offers three integrated system configurations built around these sensors: TraitFinder for lab, climate chamber, and greenhouse applications scanning 5 to 100 plants per pass; FieldScan for large-scale greenhouse gantry and field installations automating sensor-to-plant movement; and MicroScan, a compact tabletop system for smaller phenotyping tasks. HortControl is Phenospex's companion data management and analytics software, providing experiment setup, real-time visualization, growth and germination analysis, machine learning-based trait modelling, and BrAPI-compliant data export. The DroughtSpotter sensor rounds out the portfolio with soil moisture monitoring integrated into the HortControl platform.
Phenospex completed a Series A funding round in July 2018, raising $2.35 million with support from Future Food Fund, LIOF Nedermaas High Tech Ventures, and the Limburg Business Development Fund. The company serves plant breeders, universities, and research institutes across Europe, North America, and Asia. Its technology is validated in peer-reviewed scientific literature, with PlantEye achieving repeatability scores of r-squared greater than 0.94.
