"Programmable Robot Pets for Everyone to Build & Code"
Mountain View maker (est. 2017) of open-source programmable robot pets, incl. the Bittle X robot dog and Nybble Q robot cat, built on its OpenCat framework.
Petoi LLC is a robotics company based in Mountain View, California, that designs and sells small, programmable quadruped robot pets as kits and pre-assembled units for hobbyists, schools and universities. The company was founded in 2017 by Dr. Rongzhong Li, who holds a PhD in physics and an MS in computer science from Wake Forest University and a BS in physics from Nanjing University. Its COO, Kai Mai, was previously VP of Engineering at ALO7.
Petoi grew out of OpenCat, an open-source quadruped robot framework that Li started as a personal project in 2016 and published on GitHub in 2018. OpenCat remains the software foundation of the product range and is supported by a public community and documentation.
The first product, the Nybble robot cat, was crowdfunded on Indiegogo in 2018, raising USD 136,536 from 580 backers, with orders fulfilled in 2019. The Bittle robot dog followed on Kickstarter in October 2020, raising USD 567,218 from 2,052 backers against a USD 50,000 goal. The current line-up comprises Bittle X V2 (a voice-controlled robot dog), Bittle X V2 with a robotic gripper arm, the Nybble Q robot cat and Quaddle, a desk-sized open-source robot launched through a Kickstarter campaign. The original Bittle and Nybble are being sold as final stock. Petoi also offers a free Bittle X simulator.
Bittle X measures 190 x 153 x 107 mm when standing and weighs 269-353 g. It has nine servo-driven joints using either alloy (P1S) or plastic (P1L) servos and is controlled by the BiBoard, an ESP32-WROOM-32D based board with 16 MB flash, 64 Kbit external EEPROM and 12 PWM servo channels. A 7.4 V 1000 mAh Li-ion pack gives about one hour of runtime and charges in about 1.5 hours. The board includes a 6-axis IMU, speaker, serial UART, I2C, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and has a socket for a Raspberry Pi. Robots can be programmed with Petoi Coding Blocks (block-based), the Arduino IDE or an OpenCat Python API, and controlled through the Petoi Desktop and Mobile apps.
Petoi states that more than 30,000 robots have been shipped to over 60 countries. Its education programme lists use at K-12 schools, universities, community colleges and after-school camps, and it publishes curricula for STEM teaching.
