Pedsco (Canada) Ltd. designs and manufactures remotely operated vehicles under the RMI (Remote Mobile Investigator) brand from its base at 59 Skagway Avenue in Scarborough, Ontario. The company was founded in 1977 as an X-ray design and service business for the hospital and security fields. A request from a local police force for a unit that could handle suspect packages changed its direction, and Pedsco has since supplied robots to the explosive ordnance disposal field for more than 45 years. Its customers are police, fire, nuclear and military agencies and industrial institutions, served through a network of agents worldwide or directly from the factory.
The current catalogue has two platforms. The RMI-9XD is a six-wheel-drive vehicle with a removable rubber track system over pneumatic tires. It weighs 199 kg, travels at up to 3 km/h, operates from -20 C to +50 C and carries a manipulator with dual extending front arms, a lifting capacity of 80 kg, a vertical reach of 228 cm and a horizontal reach of 112 cm. It has eight camera ports, a main camera with 30x optical zoom, and a tilting and panning dual recoilless disrupter mount with laser aiming. The RMI-10GX is a narrower four-wheel-drive vehicle of 64 kg that measures 86 cm by 56 cm, lifts 34 kg, and reaches 193 cm vertically and 86 cm horizontally, which suits confined spaces. Both are driven from a briefcase operator control unit with a 10.4 inch sunlight-readable display, joysticks for proportional control and a 100 m cable on a continuous-feed reel; a 200 m cable is optional.
Pedsco lists remote handling of improvised explosive devices, hazardous chemicals and radioactive materials, fire-fighting support, hostage situations and hijackings as the missions its robots are used for. Its What's New page also refers to the RMI-9WT and RMI-10F models and to accessories such as an Elite Digital Video upgrade, claw tool kits, a power drill kit, a standard claw camera and a trailer hitch kit.
