Packet Digital is a US engineering company, founded in 2003 and based in Fargo, North Dakota, that develops battery and power systems for demanding unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) applications. The company originated developing power-saving computer chips and holds patented power-management integrated circuits branded PowerSage, which monitor a device's activity in real time and distribute only the voltage required for a given task, increasing battery life by as much as 400 percent. Packet Digital focuses its power-systems work on extending flight times, increasing payload capacity and improving operational reliability and lifetime for UAS. Through its subsidiary Badland Batteries, the company manufactures and ships US-made lithium-ion batteries from its Fargo facility, handling domestic production and assembly of printed circuit boards, battery management systems and battery packs.
Badland Batteries' smart-battery line uses pouch-cell technology optimized for high energy density and high discharge rates, with current commercial offerings in 12S and 6S high-voltage configurations at 17,000mAh and planned 23,000mAh 6S and 30,000mAh 6S models on the roadmap. The batteries feature an active battery-management system that monitors cell voltages and temperatures, performs cell balancing, limits peak current, and provides fuse-based short-circuit protection, with discharge rates up to 80C, an operating range of -20C to 60C, and UN 38.3 third-party transport certification. Packet Digital is building an 80,000-square-foot facility in Fargo that will house Badland Batteries' R&D and become the first battery-cell manufacturing site in North Dakota, and the first in the United States to manufacture battery cells specifically for drones and unmanned systems. The company has received APFIT funding to support US-made UAS battery cell production, serving drone, eVTOL and UAS markets.
