Company Overview

"Oxipital AI sells machine-vision software and camera systems that inspect product quality and guide picking robots on food production lines. The company is the continuation of Soft Robotics Inc., founded in 2012 on soft-materials and microfluidics work by Dr George M. Whitesides at Harvard University, which became known for pneumatic soft grippers able to handle irregular and delicate items. On 6 August 2024 it renamed itself Oxipital AI, a reference to the occipital lobe, and simultaneously sold the entire soft gripping business - the intellectual property, selected staff and facilities - to J. Schmalz GmbH of Glatten, Germany, for undisclosed terms. Nearly 1,000 soft grippers had been deployed in the field by then. What remains is a pure vision company under president and chief executive Mark Chiappetta, headquartered at 32 Crosby Drive, Suite 101 in Bedford, Massachusetts.

The platform is V-CORTX. It combines 3D vision and RGB camera input with pre-trained object models, a recipe builder and a vision model manager, all configured through no-code tools and a browser dashboard that reports live line analytics. The company's distinguishing technical claim is that its models are trained on entirely synthetic data, requiring no customer imagery and no human labelling, which is what lets it quote deployment in days rather than months on lines where the product itself varies constantly. Customer data is held in separate tenants, and the company holds ISO 27001 certification for information security. Cameras ship in IP69K-rated food-grade enclosures so they survive high-pressure caustic washdown.

Two applications are sold. Visual AI inspection finds defects that are hard to specify in rules - bruises on produce, excess fat on proteins, burn marks on snacks - and vision-guided robotic picking supplies pose and grasp information to pick-and-place cells. Named users are concentrated in food processing and include Lakeside Foods, Richelieu Foods, McCain, Sealed Air, Seneca Foods, Johnsonville and GloriAnn Farms. The investor base is unusual in that it is largely strategic and industrial rather than financial: ABB, FANUC, Tyson, Marel, Honeywell, Johnsonville, Yamaha and Tekfen have all invested. Total capital raised under the Soft Robotics name reached USD 86 million, the last round being USD 26 million in November 2022.

For directory users the practical point is that this company is no longer an end-effector supplier. Anyone looking for the mGrip soft gripper line should now look to Schmalz, which acquired it in 2024."
