Istanbul-based startup building affordable autonomous field robots for chemical-free weed control and precision agriculture using AI, RTK-GPS, and LiDAR.
Orbiba Robotics is an agricultural robotics startup based in Istanbul, Turkey, founded in 2022 by Ilker Bektas, who serves as Founder and CEO. The company designs and manufactures small, autonomous field robots intended for organic and regenerative farming operations, with a focus on non-chemical weed management and soil health monitoring.
The company name "Orbiba" is derived from the phrase "an organic bond," reflecting its philosophical commitment to clean food production. The founding premise is that crop quality directly affects human health, and that reducing chemical inputs in farming benefits both consumers and the environment.
Orbiba's flagship product, EcominoS (also referenced as OrbBite in some sources), is a modular autonomous field robot measuring 106 cm in length, 65 cm in width, and 95 cm in height, with an empty weight of 110 kg. The robot is powered by electric motors (4 x 500 Watt) and carries a battery pack sufficient for 6 to 8 hours of continuous field operation per charge. The retail price is approximately €18,000.
For navigation, EcominoS uses RTK-GPS providing centimeter-level positioning accuracy, LiDAR for 3D mapping and obstacle detection, depth cameras, and computer vision with sensor fusion. The robot is capable of autonomous row-following and between-row weeding operations.
In terms of productivity, the EcominoS robot can perform single in-between row weed control at a rate of up to 1 acre per hour, with a daily coverage capacity of up to 8 acres depending on field conditions. Its weed control modules include regenerative cutting tools and row-top weeding systems that target weed biomass while preserving soil structure.
The robot also incorporates multispectral and thermal imaging capabilities for biodiversity monitoring and soil health assessment. The system integrates CERN's Structured Laser Beam (SLB) technology for non-chemical laser-based weed control, which is a novel approach being developed in collaboration with CERN Venture Connect, one of Orbiba's investors.
Orbiba Robotics has raised a total of $437,000 in funding, with CERN Venture Connect listed among its investors. The company has been featured at agricultural robotics events including World FIRA and has been profiled on the GOFAR agricultural robotics platform. The company employs between 11 and 50 people.
