Company Overview

Orangewood Labs Inc. builds low-cost AI collaborative robot arms and sells them mainly by subscription, aiming at small and mid-sized manufacturers priced out of conventional industrial automation. It was founded in late 2017, went through Y Combinator in the Winter 2018 batch, and runs a dual structure: the US entity and commercial base at 2 Marina Blvd in San Francisco, with engineering and final assembly in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and further staff in New Delhi and Bengaluru. The three co-founders are Abhinav Kumar Das, who came from rural truck manufacturing, Aditya Bhatia, an industrial designer trained at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad and previously a furniture designer at Studio Lotus, and Akash Bansal, whose background is finance. The idea began with a narrow observation about how inefficient furniture finishing was, and widened from painting and sanding into general industrial work.

The arm is a six-axis collaborative unit rated at 5 kg payload, assembled in Noida from a mix of domestic and imported components with fabrication done by contract manufacturers. Rather than a one-off capital purchase, the US offer is a subscription in the range of USD 1,500 to 2,000 per robot per month, which is the company's central commercial argument against buying a conventional cobot outright. A patented machine-learning method for gear control is used to suppress whiplash in the joints.

The software layer is called RoboGPT and is what the company leads with. It lets an operator program the arm in plain text or speech (a demonstration instruction is simply telling the robot to change the paint colour from red to blue), and the company describes it as hardware-agnostic, able to create and test automation programs beyond its own arms. Published applications are bin picking, visual inspection, powder coating, spray painting, and object retrieval including a bartending demonstration. Integration partners are Viam and PickNik AI, both robotics software companies.

As of December 2025 the company reported annual revenue above USD 1 million and more than 25 clients across manufacturing, hospitality and research, with a stated ambition of 400 clients within two years and expansion into healthcare and logistics. Roughly USD 5 million has been raised across several rounds, with 7percent Ventures leading and Y Combinator, VentureSouq, KSK Angel Fund, Schox and Founders Inc among the backers; at that time the company said a Series A was imminent, intended for research and AI infrastructure. Headcount is between 30 and 40.
