Slovenian maker of FPGA-programmable industrial cameras and LOM laser-triangulation 3D smart sensors that run peak and BLOB detection on the device.
"OptoMotive, mechatronics Ltd. (registered as OptoMotive, mehatronika d.o.o.) is a Slovenian machine-vision company that designs and manufactures programmable industrial cameras and 3D smart sensors. It was founded in 2008, is based in Ljubljana, and maintains working links with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana. It sells directly and through distribution partners in Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, positioning itself as a supplier to OEMs and system integrators rather than as a reseller of other vendors' hardware.
What separates the products from conventional industrial cameras is that image processing runs on an on-board FPGA next to high-speed memory, so the camera outputs measurement results instead of raw frames. The firmware library covers high-speed peak detection for laser triangulation, high-speed BLOB detection and run-length encoding compression, and the EVO cameras are freely programmable: OptoMotive supplies development kits and source code so integrators can load their own algorithms onto the device. The company states its CMOS sensors can acquire video at rates up to 100,000 frames per second.
The standard camera range is named after predators. Smilodon 10G EVO carries Gpixel GMAX sensors from 5 to 25 megapixels on a 1G or 10G SFP+ interface; Spinosaurus EVO uses Sony Pregius Gen3 sensors from 0.5 to 7.1 megapixels over 10G SFP+, with a Spinosaurus LX EVO variant built around the 2.8-megapixel Luxima LUX2810; T-REX EVO, Velociraptor EVO and Velociraptor HS use ams CMV2000 and CMV4000 sensors of 2 to 4 megapixels over 1G Power-over-Ethernet. Earlier models Cameleon and Camelopard covered entry-level FPGA and USB applications. Alongside the cameras, the LOM series of high-speed 3D smart sensors performs laser triangulation with the peak-detection stage executed inside the sensor, which the company presents as one of the fastest and most accurate scanners available; a documented deployment is 3D scanning in mobile phone manufacturing.
Typical work is automated optical inspection, dimensional measurement and metrology on production lines, plus customised and semi-customised camera builds where a standard model does not fit the optics, interface or processing requirement. Third-party profiles also list traffic monitoring, medical imaging, surveillance and scientific and educational use, although the company's own site foregrounds industrial vision. OptoMotive is a member of Technology Park Ljubljana and has received European structural fund support. It is a small, privately held engineering company with no publicly reported venture funding."
