Norwegian maker (est. 1996) of Doppler velocity logs and the Nucleus 1000 DVL/INS for underwater vehicle navigation, plus Signature and Aquadopp profilers.
Nortek AS is a Norwegian manufacturer of acoustic Doppler instruments for measuring water motion and for navigating underwater vehicles. It was founded in Norway in 1996 by Atle Lohrmann, who is chairman of the board, and is headquartered in Rud, near Oslo. In 2021 Nortek helped form General Oceans, a holding company that groups ocean technology companies including Nortek, Tritech, Klein Marine Systems, Reach Robotics and Strategic Robotic Systems.
Nortek's oceanography products include the Aquadopp current meter and profiler (introduced 1998, Generation 2 in 2024), the Vector velocimeter (1999, Generation 2 in 2025), the Signature series of acoustic Doppler current profilers (2013), the AWAC wave and current profiler (Generation 2 in 2024), the Eco current meter, the 2D horizontal profiler, buoy systems and vessel-mounted systems (2018).
Its navigation line serves underwater robotics. Nortek introduced its Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) series in 2015 to give ROVs, AUVs and other underwater vehicles bottom-tracked velocity for dead-reckoning navigation. In 2022 it launched the Nucleus 1000, a combined DVL and AHRS/INS sensor suite designed for small underwater vehicles, and it also offers the DVL 333 Surface for surface platforms. The navigation products are supplied to vehicle builders and operators, while the profilers serve oceanographic research, offshore energy and coastal monitoring.
Nortek sells through its Norwegian headquarters and subsidiary offices in Boston (USA), Florianopolis (Brazil), Battery Point (Australia), Qingdao (China), Tokyo (Japan), La Garde (France), Hoofddorp (Netherlands), Southampton (UK), Singapore and Trondheim (Norway). It also works with third-party representatives in markets such as South Korea, India, Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada, Mexico and the UAE. The first subsidiary, Nortek USA, was formed in 1999.
