Pasadena, California NASA JPL group (Section 347) chartered to develop robotics for solar-system exploration, from planetary rovers to autonomous navigation.
The Mobility and Robotic Systems Section (Section 347) is a group at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, operated by the California Institute of Technology for NASA. It sits within JPL's Autonomous Systems Division and is chartered to develop and fly robotics technology for in-situ exploration of the solar system. The section employs roughly 130 engineers across five technical groups: Robotic Hardware Systems, Robotic Software Systems, Mobility and Manipulation, Computer Vision, and Advanced Robotic Controls.
Section engineers built mobility and manipulation systems for the Mars Exploration Rovers and the Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity), and supported instrument deployment on the InSight lander. Current projects include the PUFFER small mobile robots, a Mars Science Helicopter concept, the Venus Aerobot balloon platform, and EELS, a snake-like robot designed for glacier and ice-shaft access. The section also develops perception and control software for terrain-relative navigation and autonomous manipulation in unstructured environments, and has fielded systems in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge and the RACER off-road autonomy program.
