"Automating the hand work fresh food still depends on."
Kitchener, Ontario maker, founded 2014, of AI mushroom-picking robots with patented finger grippers and Crop Scout bed mapping, at six commercial sites.
Mycionics Inc. is a Canadian agricultural robotics company that builds AI-driven robots for handling fragile, irregular fresh produce, starting with mushrooms. The concept began in 2013 as a university mechatronics project on the farm of mushroom grower Murray Good, and the company was founded in 2014 by Stefan Glibetic (CEO), Murray Good and Doug Wagner (board chair). From 2017 the team worked on a commercial farm at Whitecrest Mushrooms. In 2022 it proved a fully automated shelf system but found that its picking units spent only about 40% of their time picking, and in 2023 it pivoted to hybrid, modular systems that work alongside human pickers. First drawer picking units and Crop Scout were piloted in Canada and Europe in 2024, and in 2025 the company moved to Kitchener-Waterloo to scale manufacturing and engineering. It reports a team of 16 and 16 issued plus 5 pending patents in North America, Europe and Australia.
The product system has four modules. Pick consists of robotic picking units fixed on the growing stack, using Mycionics' own vision system, arms and patented finger grippers that handle white and brown mushrooms from 30 to 80 mm. Pack units are mobile, wash-down-tolerant machines that cut, weigh and box mushrooms from the farm's conveyors. Point is Crop Scout's harvest autopilot, which marks the mushrooms to pick and sets picking pace for human crews. Plan is a digital twin of the farm that tracks each mushroom from a 4 mm pin to the box and forecasts yield five days ahead. Crop Scout itself is a vision system that maps every mushroom on every bed. Hardware is designed for hygiene, with washable and steamable housings, no exposed lubricants and nitrile gloves on the gripper fingers.
In 2026 grower South Mill Champs measured a 7.8% yield increase from Crop Scout, which the company equates to about 1.07 million extra pounds a year; Mycionics cites a typical payback of two to three years. Its technology is deployed or on order at six commercial sites. The company has raised more than CAD 20 million in private investment and government support; listed partners include Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGen), Mitacs, the Vector Institute, National Research Council Canada, NSERC, Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, Western University and Christiaens Group.
