MBDA is a European missile and missile-systems manufacturer headquartered in Le Plessis-Robinson, near Paris, France. It was formed in December 2001 through the merger of Aerospatiale Matra Missiles, Matra BAe Dynamics, and the missile-systems activities of Alenia Marconi Systems, and is owned jointly by Airbus (37.5 percent), BAE Systems (37.5 percent), and Leonardo (25 percent). The company employs about 13,000 people across national divisions in France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, and Spain, plus a US presence in Arlington, Virginia.
Its portfolio covers air defense, deep strike, battlefield, and maritime weapon systems, including the Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, the Aster surface-to-air missile family, the Mistral very-short-range air defense system, the Storm Shadow and Brimstone strike weapons, the SPEAR family of air-launched missiles, the Marte ER anti-ship missile, and the naval cruise missile MdCN. Through its Orchestrike program the company is developing AI-assisted target sharing for the SPEAR family while keeping a human operator in the control loop, and it is developing the Sky Warden system to counter small unmanned aircraft.
MBDA supplies missile systems to the armed forces of its home nations and to allied export customers, and maintains a long-standing complex-weapons partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence.
