KEF Robotics
"Aerial autonomy for aircraft and UAS systems"
Pittsburgh-based autonomy software company enabling GPS-denied navigation for drones and UAS via computer vision; DoD SBIR awardee.
KEF Robotics is a Pittsburgh-based autonomy software company founded in 2018, developing vision-based navigation and autonomy solutions for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Its flagship product, Tailwind, enables fixed-wing and rotary UAS to navigate GPS-denied and contested environments using computer vision, visual-inertial odometry, terrain matching, and horizon-scale landmark recognition — without GPS or human pilots. KEF serves DoD customers including DARPA, SOCOM, Army, Navy, and Air Force, and has received multiple SBIR awards totaling over $4M, including a $1.9M Army contract for open-ocean GPS-denied navigation and a $1.25M Air Force contract.
The company has partnered with FlyFocus to deliver GPS-denied navigation for Group 2/3 NATO UAS. KEF operates from Pittsburgh with an engineering office in Oslo, Norway, and a team of approximately 22 employees.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
Tailwind GPS-Denied Navigation System
Vision-based autonomy software enabling UAS to navigate GPS-denied and contested environments using camera-only perception.
Tailwind
Camera-driven visual navigation software stack enabling GPS-free flight for aircraft and UAS; available as an attachable sensor/compute payload or a software-only upgrade using the aircraft's existing sensors.
