JAMSTEC (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology) is Japan's national research institute for marine-earth science, established as Japan Marine Science and Technology Center in October 1971 and reorganized as an Independent Administrative Institution under MEXT in April 2004. Headquartered in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, JAMSTEC operates one of the world's most advanced fleets of research vessels and unmanned underwater vehicles. Key systems include the Kaiko ROV capable of full ocean depth operations at the Mariana Trench, the URASHIMA8000 AUV achieving 8,000 meter test dives in 2025, Hyper-Dolphin, and ABISMO.
JAMSTEC conducts research on ocean resources, seismic and volcanic phenomena, climate change, and deep-sea biodiversity, and collaborates internationally on global environmental monitoring programs.
