Lincoln spin-out selling autonomy-as-a-service: GPS-free lidar and vision navigation plus fleet coordination for farm robots in polytunnels and fields.
JABAS.AI Ltd (Just a Better Autonomy Solution) is a UK agricultural robotics software company registered in Lincoln, England. It was incorporated on 3 February 2026 as a spin-out supported by Ceres Agri-Tech, the technology transfer partnership of the universities of Lincoln, Cambridge and East Anglia, and its technology comes from research at the University of Lincoln's robotics groups, including the Lincoln Centre for Autonomous Systems and Lincoln Agri-Robotics. The company states that the underlying work has attracted about GBP 4 million in industry and Innovate UK funding since 2017, and in May 2026 it announced a pre-seed investment.
The company sells autonomy as a service to makers and operators of agricultural robots rather than building its own vehicles. Its software provides indoor and outdoor localization and agricultural motion planning using lidar, computer vision and localization algorithms instead of GPS, so robots can work under tree canopies, inside polytunnels and close to structures. It maps the environment on the fly, detects and responds to dynamic obstacles such as people, tractors and other robots, and integrates with existing platforms through standardized interfaces, with remote support. A fleet management layer coordinates multiple robots and monitors performance in real time. Target environments are vineyards, polytunnels and open fields, and target tasks include spraying, weeding, harvesting support and in-field logistics; a first use case is moving trays of picked soft fruit, which the company says takes 15 to 20 percent of labor time on soft fruit farms. At spin-out JABAS.AI reported navigation trials with six commercial operators.
The team is led by CEO James O'Mahony and founder and CTO Prof. Marc Hanheide, Professor of Intelligent Robotics and Interactive Systems at the University of Lincoln, with COO Mark Spurdens, Head of Safety Dr Leonardo Guevara and Head of Autonomy Dr Ibrahim Hroob; Prof. Simon Pearson MBE is commercial advisor.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
GPS-free lidar and vision navigation stack for third-party farm robots, with on-the-fly mapping and obstacle response.
AI-enabled coordination and real-time performance monitoring for fleets of agricultural robots.
