Bengaluru-based national space agency of India (est. 1969); built the Chandrayaan-3 Vikram lander and 26 kg Pragyan rover that landed near the lunar south pole.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is the space agency of India, operating under the Department of Space with headquarters at Antariksh Bhavan, New BEL Road, Bengaluru. Established in 1969, ISRO develops launch vehicles, satellites and planetary missions through a network of centres, including the U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) in Bengaluru and the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC SHAR) launch site at Sriharikota.
ISRO's most prominent robotic systems are its lunar landers and rovers. Chandrayaan-3, launched on an LVM3 rocket from SDSC SHAR in July 2023, carried a lander module and a six-wheeled rover; the lander touched down near the lunar south pole on 23 August 2023, making India the first country to land in that region. According to ISRO's mission data, the lander module weighed 1,752 kg including the 26 kg rover, the propulsion module 2,148 kg, and the integrated spacecraft 3,900 kg. The lander generated 738 W and the rover 50 W, and both were designed for one lunar day (about 14 Earth days) of operation. The prime landing site measured 4 km x 2.4 km at 69.37 degrees south, 32.35 degrees east. Lander payloads included the RAMBHA Langmuir probe, the ChaSTE thermophysical experiment, the ILSA seismometer and a NASA laser retroreflector array; the rover carried an Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) and a Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) for in-situ elemental analysis of lunar soil.
ISRO also runs robotics outreach and technology programmes, including the ISRO Robotics Challenge organised by URSC (IRoC-U 2026), which invites student teams to build robots for planetary exploration tasks.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
Six-wheeled 26 kg lunar rover with APXS and LIBS instruments, operated near the lunar south pole in 2023.
Autonomous soft-landing lunar lander carrying RAMBHA, ChaSTE, ILSA and a NASA retroreflector.
