IRISA (UMR 6074)
IRISA is a Rennes-based computer science lab (UMR 6074) of about 750 people in 40 teams, including a robotics department hosting the Rainbow multi-robot team.
IRISA (Institut de Recherche en Informatique et Systemes Aleatoires) is a French public research laboratory in computer science and IT, joint research unit UMR 6074. Its roots go back to a research lab set up at the Universite de Rennes in 1970; it took the IRISA name in 1975 as CNRS associate laboratory LA 227, and Inria joined in 1980. It is supervised by eight institutions: CentraleSupelec, CNRS, ENS Rennes, IMT Atlantique, Inria, INSA Rennes, Universite Bretagne Sud and Universite de Rennes. The lab has about 750 people in 40 teams across sites in Rennes, Lannion, Vannes and Brest, with its main site on the Beaulieu campus in Rennes.
Research is organised in seven scientific departments, including large-scale systems and networks, telecommunications and services, language and software engineering, media and communication, data and knowledge management, and a department covering digital signals and images and robotics. Cross-cutting application themes are cybersecurity, health, environment, transport, robotics, energy and culture. Image processing and robotics teams were formed at the lab between 1975 and 1980.
Robotics work includes the Rainbow team, hosted at IRISA and Inria Rennes, which studies coordination of heterogeneous robot groups, shared autonomy for directing robot teams, cooperative non-prehensile manipulation and cluster-consensus control of robotic vehicle swarms, with access to mobile-robotics arenas and robotic manipulation labs.
