German Aerospace Center robotics institute at Oberpfaffenhofen, pioneering lightweight robot arms, space robotics, and human-robot interaction since the 1970s.
The DLR Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics (IRM) is a leading robotics research institute of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), located at Oberpfaffenhofen-Weßling near Munich, Germany. Its origins date to the 1970s when DLR established an Automation and Robotics laboratory under Prof. Gerd Hirzinger; the institute has operated under its current structure since 1992. The IRM is directed by Prof. Dr.-Ing.
Alin Albu-Schäffer since 2012. Research areas include lightweight robot arms, variable impedance actuation, space robotics, teleoperation, surgical robotics, exoskeletons, and safe physical human-robot interaction. The institute developed the KUKA LWR lightweight robot arm and the JUSTIN humanoid torso, and has contributed to multiple ESA space missions.
It operates within DLR's Robotics and Mechatronics Center (RMC) alongside institutes for system dynamics and optical systems. The IRM collaborates closely with the Technical University of Munich.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
Torque-controlled lightweight robot arm developed at DLR, licensed to KUKA as the basis for the LBR iiwa collaborative robot.
DLR lightweight surgical robot arm for minimally invasive procedures, enabling robotic-assisted surgery at the operating table.
