ICube (UMR 7357)
ICube is a Strasbourg engineering, computing and imaging lab (UMR 7357) of about 750 members whose IRIS platform develops medical and surgical robotics.
ICube (Laboratoire des sciences de l'ingenieur, de l'informatique et de l'imagerie) is a French public research laboratory in Strasbourg, joint research unit UMR 7357, created in 2013. It is supervised by the Universite de Strasbourg, CNRS, INSA Strasbourg and ENGEES and has about 750 members, of whom more than 700 are researchers, teaching staff and engineers. Its four departments are computer science, imaging and robotics, electronics and photonics, and mechanics and civil engineering. The lab is based at 300 boulevard Sebastien Brant in Illkirch.
Robotics is part of the Imaging and Robotics department, and the lab's health research includes the design of surgical robots alongside biomechanical models and AI-based diagnosis and treatment. The RDH team works with the IRIS platform on robotics and virtual reality. IRIS (Imagerie, Robotique et Innovation en Sante) is located on the Hopital Civil campus in Strasbourg and works closely with INSERM, Inria, the Strasbourg university hospitals and IHU Strasbourg. It supports research on multimodal biomedical imaging, tissue mechanics, robotic assistance for medical and surgical gestures and minimally invasive therapies. Its equipment includes industrial and collaborative robots, haptic interfaces, prototype robots for teleoperated orthopaedic cement injection and teleoperated flexible endoscopy, MRI-compatible ultrasound imaging and therapy systems, 3T, 7T and 0.55T MRI scanners, MicroCT and an additive manufacturing centre. Software work includes ROS2 application development and real-time control, with open-source code published under ICube-Robotics on GitHub. The platform holds the CoRTecS and IBiSA labels and is a member of FLI, TIRREX and ROBOTEX 2.0.
