Edgmond, Shropshire agricultural university founded 1901, gaining full university status in 2012; ran the 2016 Hands Free Hectare autonomous farming project.
Harper Adams University, located at Edgmond near Newport, Shropshire, England, is a specialist institution for agriculture, food, engineering, and land-based sciences. It was founded in 1901 as Harper Adams Agricultural College, following an 1892 bequest from Thomas Harper Adams, gained taught-degree awarding powers in 1996, became a university college in 1998, and received full university status in December 2012.
In 2016, the university's engineering department ran Hands Free Hectare, a project that planted, tended, and harvested a hectare of spring barley using only autonomous tractors, drones, and robotic equipment, without a person entering the field, a claimed world first for arable crop production. The project later expanded into Hands Free Farm, scaling the approach to a 35-hectare site. Harper Adams operates the Agricultural Engineering Innovation Centre and the Crop and Environment Research Centre, and teaches degree programs including Robotics, Automation and Mechatronic Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, and Applied Data Science.
The university has received Innovate UK funding for agricultural robotics and precision-farming research, and works with industry and government bodies to move that research into commercial agri-technology use.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
Autonomous arable farming research platform that demonstrated fully robot-managed crop production without human intervention in the field.
