FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik (FZI Research Center for Information Technology) is a non-profit applied research institute founded in 1985 and headquartered at Haid-und-Neu-Strasse 10-14, 76131 Karlsruhe, Germany, with a branch office in Berlin. Closely affiliated with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the FZI conducts application-oriented research in computer science and robotics, with particular strengths in autonomous systems, mobile manipulation, and service robotics. Its most prominent robotics platform is LAURON, a six-legged walking robot under development since the early 1990s and now in its sixth generation (2024), designed for demanding outdoor inspection tasks.
FZI's Living Lab Service Robotics also develops mobile manipulation systems and operates platforms including ANYmal and Spot for applied research. Additional research areas include artificial intelligence, intelligent transportation, sustainable engineering, and digital health. The institute transfers technology to industry and public-sector partners through collaborative projects and spin-offs.
