Embodied Inc., founded in 2016 and headquartered in Pasadena, California, was a social robotics company created by Dr. Paolo Pirjanian (formerly CTO of iRobot) and robotics professor Maja Matarić of USC. The company developed Moxie, a conversational AI companion robot designed to help children ages 5 to 10 build social-emotional skills including empathy, critical thinking, emotional regulation, and creative expression through play-based learning. Moxie used the proprietary SocialX Conversational AI, integrated with large language models, facial expression detection, tone-of-voice analysis, and noise-resilient speech recognition.
The robot earned a 2024 CES Innovation Award and an iKeepSafe FERPA privacy certification. Embodied raised approximately $86.3 million across seven funding rounds before ceasing operations in November 2024.
