"Roads for cars. Cell towers for phones. NEST® for drones."
Italian drone-in-a-box maker founded 2018 in Trieste; its NEST nodes and K-series drones run 24/7 networked missions, backed by a EUR 15M Series A.
Dronus S.p.A. is an Italian manufacturer of autonomous drone systems built around NEST, a patented docking and recharging node that can be mounted on existing poles, towers and lampposts or on pylons supplied by the company. Instead of one drone tied to one base, several NEST nodes are linked into what Dronus calls an Aerial Mesh: drones take off, fly their missions, and land on whichever node in the network best suits their remaining charge, which may not be the node they left from. A single control station lets one operator supervise multi-site, multi-NEST deployments. The company was founded in 2018 in Trieste and states that its systems are designed and assembled in Italy.
Each NEST node carries battery backup, climate control and on-board AI edge processing that works without an internet connection, with LAN, Wi-Fi and cellular links. Published node specifications include an operating range of -20 to +60 degrees Celsius, wind resistance to 120 km/h, tolerance of 100 percent relative humidity and an IP54 rating. Flight time, range and payload figures for the drones are not published.
The drones are sold as a K-series matched to applications. The K250X carries a thermal camera for smart-city monitoring and holds an EASA Design Verification Report for SORA M2 compliance, supporting BVLOS flight over populated areas. The K3 carries thermal and gas sensors for fugitive-emission detection at oil and gas sites and is certified for ATEX Zone 2 explosive atmospheres. The K500L uses native mmWave 5G to navigate indoors without GPS and scans barcodes and QR codes for warehouse inventory; on 2 October 2026 the US FCC exempted the K500L and its Nest V2 dock from the Covered List under a Conditional Approval, on the condition that Dronus follows an onshoring plan. The K500I covers industrial perimeters, while the K500 and the extended-range Krypton serve ports, maritime sites and restricted zones such as fuel storage.
Named validation partners include HTX, the Singapore Home Team Science and Technology Agency, for urban security, and Eni in southern Italy for oil and gas monitoring; Eni has been an industrial partner since 2019. Dronus also has a three-year strategic partnership with Qualcomm covering AI integration and works with Precision Technologies as a regional commercial partner since 2022. It reports operations in Italy, Asia and the United States, and RobotToday reporting identifies it as majority owner of Siralab Robotics, a University of Perugia spin-off that builds small tactical drones.
Founder and chief executive Marco Ballerini is an aerospace engineer who previously held senior roles at Northrop Grumman and Selex ES. The company employs about 30 engineers and specialists. It raised a EUR 5 million seed round from private investors in 2021 and a EUR 15 million Series A in the first quarter of 2026, led by Algebris Climatech with Eni Next and Italian institutional investors. Its NEST technology is covered by patents in 12 jurisdictions.
