Australia's national science agency robotics division, part of CSIRO Data61, developing field robots and autonomous systems since 1980 at QCAT in Brisbane.
CSIRO Robotics is the robotics and autonomous systems research division of Australia's national science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), operating within the Data61 business unit. Based at the Queensland Centre for Advanced Technologies (QCAT) in Pullenvale, Brisbane, the group has more than 100 researchers and traces its roots to 1980 when CSIRO first established manufacturing technology research. The Robotics Innovation Centre (RIC) is a 600-square-metre custom facility housing the Southern Hemisphere's largest motion capture system, UAVs, UGVs, legged robots, high-accuracy manipulators, and a 13x5-metre pool for aquatic robot testing.
Research areas include 3D LiDAR SLAM, field robotics, agricultural automation, mining inspection, environmental monitoring, and space robotics. In 2026, CSIRO launched Vetra, an AI infrastructure platform supporting real-time robotic learning.
