The Control and Automation for Intelligent Systems (CAIS) Lab is an academic research laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University. It is a multidisciplinary group of faculty and graduate and undergraduate researchers working at the intersection of control theory, artificial intelligence, and manufacturing systems. The lab's research focuses on developing, analyzing, and applying control and AI methods to improve the safety, flexibility, and performance of complex, dynamic systems, with a particular emphasis on manufacturing and automation.

Its work is organized around three core areas: complex, dynamic systems; control and automation; and artificial intelligence. Within these areas the lab studies how to design controllers and learning-based methods that make automated and robotic production systems more adaptive and reliable, addressing problems where physical dynamics, decision-making, and data-driven models intersect. The lab publishes academic research, trains graduate and undergraduate students, and operates within Penn State's broader engineering and AI research ecosystem.

The primary laboratory is located in the Leonhard Building on the University Park campus in State College, Pennsylvania, with additional graduate student office space in the same building. As a university research group rather than a commercial vendor, CAIS Lab does not sell products; its outputs are research results, methods, publications, and trained researchers relevant to industrial automation, intelligent control, and manufacturing robotics. The lab collaborates across disciplines and contributes to the application of control and AI techniques in real-world automated systems.
