Coherent Corp. (NYSE: COHR), formerly II-VI Incorporated, is an American manufacturer of engineered materials, optoelectronic components and laser systems headquartered in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1971 by Carl Johnson and James Hawkey, the company adopted the Coherent name in 2022 after II-VI's acquisition of laser maker Coherent, Inc. It operates research, manufacturing, sales and service facilities at roughly 130 locations worldwide and employs over 26,000 people, reporting revenue of about US$5.81 billion in fiscal 2025. Coherent is vertically integrated across compound semiconductors and photonics, producing optical materials such as zinc selenide, silicon carbide and indium phosphide, as well as VCSELs, lasers, optical transceivers and precision optics.
Its portfolio serves optical communications and AI datacenter networking, industrial laser processing, semiconductor capital equipment, aerospace and defense, life sciences and consumer 3D sensing. For robotics and automation, Coherent supplies the photonic building blocks behind perception and ranging: VCSEL and edge-emitting laser arrays used in LiDAR and 3D depth sensing, optical components for machine-vision and inspection systems, and high-power lasers for automated manufacturing, welding and material processing on robotic platforms. The company grew through decades of acquisitions including Finisar, Marlow Industries, Photop Technologies and Coherent, Inc., building one of the largest photonics and compound-semiconductor businesses in the world. As a component supplier, Coherent enables sensing, communication and laser-processing capabilities across industrial automation, autonomous systems and advanced manufacturing rather than building complete robots itself.
