Company Overview

The Center for Smart Convergent Manufacturing Systems (CSCMS) is a research center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York, designated as a New York State Center for Advanced Technology (CAT). CSCMS develops advanced manufacturing processes, solutions, and systems by bringing together modeling, simulation, prototyping, and engineering expertise from researchers across diverse fields. The center envisions manufacturing systems that are not merely automated but truly intelligent, in which machines think, adapt, and evolve in partnership with and learning from human operators, and where the convergence of advanced processing, robotics, and AI drives breakthroughs across industries. Its research is organized around five focus areas: Manufacturing Process Architecture and Design; Robotics and Human-Machine Collaboration; Distributed Sensing and Decision Making; Digital Twins, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning; and Privacy, Security and Data-sharing in Manufacturing.

As a New York State CAT, CSCMS aims to empower innovators, accelerate next-generation technologies, and support a new era of manufacturing across New York State and beyond. The center collaborates with an extensive network of industry partners and affiliates spanning advanced manufacturing, aerospace, energy, and composites, including Addcomposites, FormAlloy, Henderson Sewing Machines, Trelleborg, Ludlow Electrochemical Hardware, Sono-Tek, GE Vernova, GE Aerospace, Corvid, Ross Precision Manufacturing, and Wason Technologies. Through these partnerships, CSCMS works with companies to solve challenging manufacturing problems and transfer research into industrial practice, positioning robotics and human-machine collaboration at the core of its mission to reshape modern manufacturing.
