Company Overview

CEA-List is a technological research institute of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). It is one of the three institutes of the CEA Tech technological research division and specialises in smart digital systems. It employs about 750 people in the Paris region. Its main site is the Nano-INNOV centre on Avenue de la Vauve in Palaiseau, with other sites at Digiteo, CEA Saclay and CEA Grenoble. The institute holds the Carnot label and is financed mainly through industrial research contracts, organising its business-driven R&D around flagship programmes.

Its fields of work cover advanced manufacturing (collaborative robotics, virtual and augmented reality, non-destructive testing, instrumentation and radioactivity metrology), embedded systems (design, validation and verification, sensor integration, safety and security, computing architectures), data intelligence (ambient intelligence, human-machine interfaces, IoT, data analysis, knowledge engineering, diamond sensors) and ionising radiation for health.

Robotics work sits in the Interactive Robotics Laboratory, which hosted the Paris-Saclay competence centre of the EU ESMERA project. The lab works on human-friendly robotics and cobotics, human-robot collaboration, exoskeletons, robot programming by demonstration and mechatronics, and provides robotic equipment, software and IT infrastructure for feasibility studies in healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, security, transport, intervention in hazardous environments, agri-food and field robotics. The institute also contributed the FFLOR (Future Factory @ LORraine) platform at the PSA Tremery site near Metz.

Technology-transfer examples cited by CEA-List include Arcure, which co-developed a vehicle-mounted 3D camera that detects pedestrians around industrial and construction vehicles, and Extende, which distributes the CIVA non-destructive testing simulation software used by about 350 users worldwide.
