Company Overview

BrainChip is an Australian technology company founded in 2004 by Peter Van Der Made and headquartered in Sydney, New South Wales, and listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (BRN). It develops Akida, a fully digital, event-based neuromorphic processor architecture and IP core that executes spiking neural networks for edge AI applications. Akida processes data as events rather than dense frames, using rank-order coding and on-chip learning to deliver low-latency inference at milliwatt-class power, which suits always-on sensing in battery-operated and embedded devices. The company licenses Akida as semiconductor IP and also offers reference silicon: the AKD1000, fabricated on 28 nm CMOS, integrates an Arm Cortex-M4 host, supports up to 800 effective GOPS at under 1 mW per GOP, and is sold on PCIe and M.2 development boards; the newer AKD1500, fabricated on 22 nm FD-SOI, delivers close to 1 TOPS while consuming under 200 mW in serial mode, adds on-device learning and 1 MB on-chip local memory, and connects to x86, Arm or RISC-V hosts over PCIe and SPI.

BrainChip provides the MetaTF development environment for training and deploying spiking and convolutional neural networks onto Akida, and supports configurable 1-, 2-, 4- and 8-bit weights. Target applications include wearables, IoT sensors, audio and vision processing, industrial monitoring and automotive systems where ultra-low power and on-device learning matter. The company markets itself as a first-to-market provider of digital event-based neuromorphic processors and partners with ecosystem players including Arm and Edge Impulse. For robotics, Akida supplies efficient on-device perception and inference for vision, audio and sensor-fusion tasks at the edge.
