The Autoware Foundation is a non-profit organization headquartered in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan, established in December 2018 to govern the Autoware open-source software project for autonomous driving. TIER IV, Linaro (through its 96Boards initiative), and Apex.AI founded the organization jointly, with TIER IV transferring its intellectual property in the Autoware codebase to the new entity.
Autoware originated in 2015, when Shinpei Kato developed it as an open-source autonomous-driving stack at Nagoya University, working with Nagasaki University and Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. Built on Linux and the Robot Operating System, the current release, Autoware.Universe, runs on ROS 2 and covers perception, localization, path planning, and vehicle control. The codebase is published on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license. Rather than manufacturing hardware or selling software licenses, the foundation sets technical standards, runs working groups, and coordinates interoperability testing among members.
Member organizations include Arm, Intel, LG Electronics, RoboSense, Velodyne Lidar, TomTom, Renesas Electronics, and Nagoya University. Autoware software is used in autonomous-vehicle research, public road trials, shuttle services, and robotaxi pilots in Japan, the United States, and Europe.
