AtkinsRéalis
"Engineering a better future for our planet and its people"
Canadian engineering and EPC company (formerly SNC-Lavalin) deploying autonomous robotics for nuclear decommissioning and energy sites.
AtkinsRéalis Group Inc., headquartered in Montreal, Canada, is a engineering services, project management and nuclear company that rebranded from SNC-Lavalin Group in September 2023. The organization traces its origins to predecessor firms dating back to 1911 and now employs roughly 37,000 people, operating in over 50 countries. Its core markets include nuclear, infrastructure, transportation, water, environment, clean energy and project services.
Within robotics and automation, AtkinsRéalis has built a substantive practice focused on deploying robots for safer, faster and lower-cost decommissioning and waste-management operations in hazardous nuclear environments. The company developed the AtkinsRéalis Remote Glovebox Operation (ARGO) system, which integrates Kinova robotic arms and has been deployed at the Sellafield site in the UK to prove viability at scale, and it has extended its strategic partnership with Kinova to advance nuclear robotics. AtkinsRéalis collaborates with the Oxford Robotics Institute to scale autonomous robotic solutions, integrating ORI systems into its platforms for autonomous navigation, advanced mapping and radiological hotspot detection at nuclear sites.
The firm also partnered with prosthetic-hand developer COVVI to adapt a bionic hand delivering near-human dexterity for nuclear use, building on its patented work deploying collaborative robots in the sector. AtkinsRéalis operates a USD 20 million Technology Center in Richland, Washington, dedicated to nuclear and environmental cleanup technologies, net-zero and hydrogen clean-energy advances, digital solutions and robotics implementation. While AtkinsRéalis is an engineering consultancy rather than a robot manufacturer, its robotics integration work for decommissioning and extreme environments represents a genuine, applied automation capability.
