"Energy to thrive"
Alameda, California battery materials company founded in 2021 by Stanford-linked researchers; developed the Proteus polymer electrolyte for lithium cells.
Anthro Energy is a battery materials company headquartered in Alameda, California. Founded in 2021 by David Mackanic and Joe Papp following research connected to Stanford University, the company develops polymer electrolyte technology meant to replace the liquid electrolytes used in conventional lithium-ion batteries.
Its main product, Anthro Proteus, is an electrolyte platform designed to work across different cell shapes, sizes, and chemistries, including silicon-anode designs, without requiring changes to existing battery manufacturing lines. According to the company, Proteus-based cells offer roughly ten times the toughness of standard liquid-electrolyte cells against swelling, short circuits, and impact, plus up to 35 percent higher energy density from silicon-anode compatibility. Anthro sells structural battery cells and standalone electrolyte formulations for consumer electronics, micromobility, defense, and electric vehicles, and its cells have passed UN 38.3 transport testing.
The company manufactures at its Alameda facility, where it is building what it describes as the first US-owned advanced electrolyte plant, a project awarded $18.4 million in federal Section 48C tax credits in 2025. Anthro closed a $20 million Series A in 2024 with Union Square Ventures, Collab Fund, Emerson Collective, and In-Q-Tel, plus support from the US Army and Department of Energy.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
