Amazon Robotics LLC is the robotics division of Amazon.com, headquartered at 300 Riverpark Drive, North Reading, Massachusetts. It originated as Kiva Systems, founded in 2003 by Mick Mountz, Peter Wurman, and Raffaello D'Andrea to develop autonomous mobile robots for warehouse automation. Amazon acquired Kiva Systems in March 2012 for approximately USD 775 million, and in August 2015 renamed the entity Amazon Robotics LLC.
The division designs and deploys autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), robotic drive units, robotic arms, and conveyor automation systems across Amazon's global fulfilment centre network. Its core innovation—bringing portable inventory storage pods to stationary pickers rather than routing pickers to shelves—significantly increased pick rate and storage density. Amazon Robotics also develops autonomous vehicles, sortation systems, and advanced manipulation robots such as Sparrow and Robin, integrating computer vision and machine learning for high-speed parcel handling.
