Alibaba's Amap mapping unit building an open-environment autonomous quadruped guide robot called Tutu.
Amap (Gaode Maps), the digital-mapping and navigation unit of Alibaba Group, has stood up an embodied-intelligence robotics initiative publicly branded "Gaode Dongliang," with its product information hosted at abot.amap.com under the parent Amap domain. The unit's first publicly demonstrated hardware is Tutu, a four-legged (quadruped) autonomous robot styled after a guide dog, unveiled and trialed in April 2026, including a public demonstration at the Beijing Yizhuang half marathon. Tutu is designed to navigate open, unstructured environments spanning indoor and outdoor settings without a preset route and without manual remote control, performing everyday assistive tasks such as fetching coffee, retrieving deliveries, and guiding visually impaired users along a route while avoiding both static and moving obstacles.
The underlying technology stack is described by Amap as "ABot," organized into three layers -- Data, Model, and Agent -- built on top of roughly two decades of spatiotemporal mapping data accumulated by Amap's core mapping business. The navigation component, ABot-N0, is presented as supporting five core navigation tasks and providing dual safety modes for both line-of-sight and beyond-line-of-sight operation, while a companion large "world model," ABot-World, is trained on tens of millions of real-world navigation scenarios so the robot can reflect on and correct failed attempts rather than executing a fixed task script. Amap has stated that the project draws on wider Alibaba Group resources, including the Tongyi Qianwen large-language-model family and DAMO Academy research, and that it intends to expand its embodied-robot lineup beyond the initial quadruped guide robot.
As a business line operated directly by Amap rather than an independently incorporated and independently financed startup, the unit functions as a subsidiary initiative of Alibaba/Amap; its public site carries only a Beijing ICP registration number and a purchase-intent registration form, with no separate headcount, revenue, or manufacturing-site disclosures.
