ABB Robotics is the dedicated robotics and discrete automation division of ABB Ltd., headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland. ABB's robotics heritage dates to 1974, when its predecessor ASEA introduced the IRB 6 — the world's first commercially available all-electric, microprocessor-controlled industrial robot. Today, ABB Robotics is consistently ranked among the four largest industrial robot manufacturers globally alongside FANUC, KUKA, and Yaskawa, holding the number-one position in China.
The division employs over 11,000 people and has installed more than 300,000 robots in over 53 countries. Its product portfolio is organized into industrial articulated robots (IRB series), collaborative robots (cobots), and software platforms. The IRB series spans compact robots (IRB 120, IRB 1100 with payloads up to 4 kg) through medium-duty (IRB 1300, IRB 2600, IRB 4600 handling 5-60 kg) to heavy-payload systems (IRB 6700, IRB 7600, IRB 8700 with payloads up to 800 kg and reaches to 4.2 m). In 2025, ABB expanded its large-robot lineup with the modular IRB 5710 and IRB 5720 families for complex EV manufacturing tasks.
On the cobot side, ABB's YuMi (launched 2015) was the world's first truly collaborative dual-arm robot. The GoFa CRB 15000 (2021) offers a 950 mm reach and 5 kg payload at speeds up to 2.2 m/s with certified ISO/TS 15066 safety. The SWIFTI (2021) cobot achieves industrial speeds of 5 m/s with a 4 kg payload and 580 mm reach, bridging collaborative and industrial performance. The single-arm YuMi variant (CRB 14000) addresses precision assembly.
ABB's OmniCore robot controller platform provides open connectivity, edge computing, and AI-enabled motion planning. The RobotStudio offline programming and simulation software enables customers to design, test, and optimize robot cells before deployment.
ABB Robotics serves automotive, electronics, food and beverage, logistics, pharmaceuticals, and metals industries. In October 2025, SoftBank Group announced an agreement to acquire ABB's robotics division for $5.375 billion, with regulatory approvals expected to close in 2026.
