YorRobots is the university's cross-departmental robotics initiative, drawing researchers from more than six departments including Computer Science and Electronic Engineering. Its York Robotics Laboratory, on Baird Lane behind the TFTB building on Campus East, provides an 80-square-meter double-height arena fitted with multiple robotic tracking systems and controlled lighting for repeatable experiments, plus a teaching classroom and a technical workshop; the arena supports autonomous flying vehicles, swarm robotics, and ground robots. Research themes span environmental monitoring, healthcare robotics, archaeological applications, and laboratory automation.
The ALBERT programme develops methods for deploying robots in chemistry laboratories and is supported by the ALBERT Centre for Doctoral Training. The EPSRC-funded RoboCalc project builds a formal framework for modelling, simulation, and verified programming of mobile and autonomous robots, and the Institute for Safe Autonomy extends this toward verifiable, certifiable autonomous systems in safety-critical domains. This research has drawn funding from Lloyd's Register, EPSRC, the EU, the Royal Society, NERC, and DSTL.
