Southeast University (SEU) is a national key university in Nanjing, China, administered directly by the Ministry of Education. Its lineage begins with Sanjiang Normal School, founded in 1902 on the site of the Ming-dynasty Imperial College; it became National Central University in 1928, Nanjing Institute of Technology in 1952, and resumed the Southeast University name in 1988. It was a first-batch member of Project 985 and Project 211 and was designated a Double First-Class Class-A institution in 2017.
Engineering is the core strength: SEU is one of China's original Four Great Engineering Institutes and one of the eight founding architecture schools. Robotics and automation work sits in the School of Automation and the School of Instrument Science and Engineering, with research in robotic grasping, tactile sensing, autonomous systems, and artificial intelligence. The university operates eight national key laboratories, counts 18 academicians of the Chinese academies of sciences and engineering, and lists 12 disciplines under Double First-Class construction and 18 in the ESI top one percent.
SEU enrolls 17,277 undergraduate and 26,256 graduate students, including about 2,400 international students, across 39 schools, on three Nanjing campuses (Sipailou, Jiulonghu, Dingjiaqiao) plus Wuxi and Suzhou.
