Skycart is a San Jose, California company developing autonomous drones and cloud software for last-mile delivery, targeting deliveries in 30 minutes or less for e-commerce, food and grocery, and healthcare customers.
Its aircraft, Nimbus, is a hybrid design with wings and canards for aerodynamic lift and rotatable electric motors, so it takes off and lands like a helicopter and cruises like an airplane. Skycart publishes a 15 kg payload, a range of 100 miles, and cruise speeds above 80 mph. An internal rack holds four 8 x 8 x 10 inch boxes, allowing four drops in one mission, and each package can be lowered by line, released by parachute, or placed on the ground through a small door. Safety provisions include multiple cameras with AI obstacle detection, redundant processors and sensors, and an emergency recovery system.
Flight is managed by Cumulus, a cloud service that plans and controls missions to GPS coordinates over 4G cellular links, with radio and Iridium satellite backup for beyond-line-of-sight operation outside cellular coverage. Customers and operators interact through the Altus mobile app. Skycart has been covered by Bloomberg, Wired, CNN, NBC, and CBS, and positions the system against the last-mile logistics market it values at 120 billion dollars.
