Sewbo's process temporarily stiffens fabric panels with polyvinyl alcohol, a water-soluble polymer also used in laundry pods, so that off-the-shelf industrial robots can grip and manipulate cloth as if it were rigid sheet metal rather than limp fabric. A robotic arm fitted with suction cups feeds the stiffened panels through cutting and sewing equipment; after assembly, the polyvinyl alcohol is rinsed away with hot water and recovered for reuse in a closed loop. The company has demonstrated the process on T-shirts and face masks, and its current development work is focused on large-scale denim and blue jean production.
