Company Overview

Seegrid Corporation builds autonomous mobile robots that move pallets and carts inside factories and warehouses, and it has been doing so longer than almost anyone in the category. The company was founded in 2003 in the Pittsburgh area by Carnegie Mellon roboticist Hans Moravec, commercialised its Grid Engine navigation in 2005, shipped its first autonomous tow tractor in 2009, and by 2025 had passed twenty million autonomous miles driven. It is led by chief executive Chris Baker with Steve Barto as chief financial officer, Abe Ghabra as chief operating officer, David Griffin as chief strategy officer and Tom Panzarella as chief technology officer, from 216 RIDC Park West Drive in the Coraopolis area west of Pittsburgh.

The fleet is built around lift trucks and tugs rather than small load carriers. Lift EL1 raises 2,700 lb to 5 ft 2 in and is aimed at space-constrained third-party logistics and retail fulfilment; Lift RS1 takes 3,500 lb to 6 ft for low-lift manufacturing and warehousing; Lift CR1 handles 4,000 lb to 15 ft for heavy manufacturing and vertical storage; and Tow Tractor S7 pulls up to 10,000 lb for long-haul cart tugging, parts-to-line delivery and cross-docking. Above the vehicles sit Fleet Central for fleet management, its Supervisor module, the Fleet Geek analytics tool, and an Autonomous Buffer Management solution for staging areas. Navigation combines onboard AI, lidar SLAM and the proprietary GRID Engine, and needs no floor tape, magnets or other fixed infrastructure.

Safety and compliance are a stated differentiator rather than a footnote: the company reports zero recordable safety incidents across its installed base, holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification for information security, builds to the ANSI B56.5 and ANSI R15.08 industrial vehicle and mobile robot safety standards, and has made the Lift EL1 VDA 5050 compliant so it can be driven by third-party fleet managers. Current deployment figures are 2,500-plus AMRs at more than 200 customer sites for over 50 global brands, among them GM, Ford, Amazon, Whirlpool, GE Appliances, John Deere, Caterpillar, Trane, Pactiv Evergreen, DHL Supply Chain and Giant Eagle.

Ownership is unusual for a robotics company of this size. Giant Eagle, the privately held Pittsburgh supermarket group, has been Seegrid's largest backer since at least 2014, increased its stake through a USD 25 million round in 2016, and is described in recent reporting as majority shareholder; former Giant Eagle chairman David S. Shapira sits on the board. The company nevertheless continues to raise conventional venture rounds, including a USD 50 million Series D in 2024 and a further USD 25 million filed in October 2025 against a USD 50 million target, on cumulative funding reported at over USD 285 million. Headcount was reported at roughly 175 employees with a total workforce near 230 in 2025.
