Pix4D was founded on June 2, 2011, as a spinoff from the Computer Vision Lab at EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne) in Switzerland by Christoph Strecha, Olivier Kueng, Pascal Fua, and Vincent Lepetit. The company develops photogrammetry and drone mapping software that transforms images captured by drones, cameras, and mobile devices into accurate geospatial outputs including orthomosaics, point clouds, digital elevation models, and 3D textured meshes. Headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, Pix4D operates seven international offices including San Francisco, Denver, Berlin, Madrid, Shanghai, and Tokyo.
The core product, PIX4Dmapper, is a desktop photogrammetry platform that processes aerial and ground imagery and supports ground control points (GCPs) for centimeter-level absolute accuracy. PIX4Dmatic is designed for large-area and corridor surveys at scale, with LiDAR-imagery fusion capabilities that handle datasets too large for Mapper. PIX4Dfields is purpose-built for agricultural multispectral analysis, delivering NDVI and NDRE vegetation index maps from multispectral drone imagery. PIX4Dreact enables rapid 2D map generation in emergency response situations. PIX4Dsurvey bridges photogrammetry and CAD workflows, allowing surveyors to extract vector data — contour lines, breaklines, and 3D polylines — from point clouds. PIX4Dcatch is a mobile app for LiDAR and photogrammetric 3D scanning using iOS smartphones; the 2024 update added augmented reality guidance and compatibility with RTK devices from Trimble, Topcon, and Leica. PIX4Dcloud is the company's cloud-based processing and collaboration platform, with a 2024 enterprise tier called Pix4Dcloud Industrial for large-scale multi-sensor fusion.
Pix4D's software is used across surveying, construction, agriculture, public safety, inspection, and mining. The company partners with Trimble for integrated data workflows, connecting PIX4Dcatch field capture to Trimble Connect project management. Revenue reached approximately EUR 30 million in 2024, driven by subscription licensing and enterprise contracts. Christoph Strecha transitioned from CEO to Chief Scientist in 2024. Pix4D operates independently as a software business with a technology partnership with Trimble, not as a Trimble subsidiary.
