Company Overview

The JSK Robotics Laboratory (Johou Systems Kougaku, or Information Systems Engineering) is a university robotics laboratory at the University of Tokyo, located on the seventh floor of Engineering Building No. 2 on the Hongo campus in Bunkyo, Tokyo. Its faculty and students belong to the Department of Mechano-Informatics in the Faculty of Engineering and to departments of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology and the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies. The laboratory is headed by Professor Kei Okada; in 2026 it listed nine academic and technical staff, a cooperating lecturer, and about 56 doctoral, master's and undergraduate students.

JSK works on the functions and systems needed for intelligent robots that operate in human environments, drawing on artificial intelligence, cognitive science, adaptation and life-form systems. It is best known for humanoid robots built and modified in-house. These include the high-power humanoid platform JAXON; versions of the HRP-2 humanoid adapted for daily assistance, outdoor work, omnidirectional mobility and wide-and-zoom vision; the perception-action humanoid H7; and a long series of musculoskeletal humanoids, Kenta, Kotaro, Kojiro, Kenzoh, Kenshiro and Kengoro, that imitate human muscle and bone structure. Other lines cover multi-rotor and multi-link aerial robots, flexible ""flesh"" exteriors and whole-body sensor suits with distributed 3D force sensing, and work on the PR2 omnidirectional personal robot.

The laboratory also develops robot software infrastructure, including a robot system programming language, open-source robot software, 3D tracking vision and high-power drive systems. It took part in Google Summer of Code from 2016 to 2019 as a mentoring organisation, with projects in Lisp, ROS, OpenRTM and OpenHRP. Its research has also fed the university's IRT programme on robot systems for an ageing society.

For industry, JSK is a research and talent source rather than a vendor: its robots are research platforms, not products for sale.

Lucid Bots Introduces Sherpa HighLine for Enhanced Cleaning Drone Performance

Lucid Bots Introduces Sherpa HighLine for Enhanced Cleaning Drone Performance

Lucid Bots has launched the Sherpa HighLine, a motorized rooftop pulley system designed to assist its Sherpa cleaning drone in tackling tall buildings. This innovative system was demonstrated at the Monarch Casino Resort Spa in Black Hawk, Colorado, where the drone successfully cleaned the exterior of a 23-story hotel tower, reaching an impressive height of 280 feet. This marks a significant achievement, as it is reported to be the highest operation of a cleaning drone in the US. The Sherpa HighLine system alleviates the burden on the drone by supporting the weight of the cleaning hose from the rooftop, allowing for the use of larger-diameter hoses that can deliver more water flow. This advancement is crucial for operators aiming to clean taller buildings, as it offers greater flexibility and efficiency. Robert Blank, vice president of research and development at Lucid Bots, emphasized that this support system changes the operational dynamics for cleaning drones. As commercial cleaning companies explore the potential of the Sherpa HighLine, they may find new opportunities in previously challenging structures. The ability to clean taller buildings could enhance job efficiency and value, making it a noteworthy development in the cleaning industry.
