Edgewing is a joint venture headquartered in Reading, United Kingdom, formed by BAE Systems (UK), Leonardo (Italy), and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd. (JAIEC, Japan), each holding an equal 33.3 percent stake. The partnership was announced in December 2024 and formally named Edgewing on 20 June 2025, and it was created to lead engineering, airworthiness, and certification work on the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a trilateral effort between the UK, Italy, and Japan to field a sixth-generation combat air system.
In April 2026 the GCAP International Government Organisation awarded Edgewing a single joint international contract worth about 686 million pounds sterling, consolidating work previously run under three separate national contracts. A crewed supersonic demonstrator aircraft is targeted to fly around 2027, and production aircraft are planned to enter service from 2035. The programme is intended to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon in UK and Italian service and the Mitsubishi F-2 in Japanese service, combining a crewed fighter with networked uncrewed aircraft, autonomous adjuncts, and sensors as a connected system rather than a single airframe.
Edgewing operates major sites in the UK, Italy, and Japan, one in each partner nation, and is led by Chief Executive Officer Marco Zoff.
