Brighter Signals

Brighter Signals B.V. is an Amsterdam-based developer of fabric-embedded tactile sensors, headquartered at Prins Hendriklaan 51, 1075 BA Amsterdam, Netherlands. The company emerged from stealth on June 23, 2025, with backing from the early-stage venture firm Antler, which also introduced the founding team to one another. It is led by CEO Andrew Klein and COO Christine Fraser, with Edward Shim as the inventor behind the underlying sensor technology, developed over several years of prototyping supported by more than USD 2 million in research and development grants.

The company's core asset is a patented portfolio of multi-modal tactile sensors built into a single flexible fabric layer. Rather than using discrete taxel arrays or rigid load cells, the material captures pressure gradients in real time and measures force, weight, position, movement and proximity, and can distinguish between a human body and an inanimate object. The sensing layer is lightweight, durable and fully recyclable, and is designed to be embedded directly into textiles, surfaces and structural components rather than mounted as a separate module. Brighter Signals positions the technology as a platform rather than a single product, marketing it under the description of high-depth tactile perception.

Three markets are targeted. In robotics, the sensors are aimed at grippers, manipulators and humanoid systems that require contact feedback for precise object handling. In automotive, the primary application is occupant classification and intelligent airbag control through in-seat sensing, addressing tightening occupant safety requirements in Europe, China and the United States. In healthcare, the same material supports passive monitoring of heart rate, breathing and blood pressure through wearables and smart mattresses. The company also cites smart home, retail and industrial facility use cases.

Brighter Signals does not operate its own factories. In October 2025 it signed a strategic manufacturing partnership with Jiangsu Changshu Automotive Trim Group (CAIP), a Tier-1 cockpit and interior systems supplier founded in 1996 and listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange since 2017, with more than 40 facilities across China and Europe and over 10,000 employees. CAIP produces the sensors at its Chinese plants, with production planned to extend to a new European facility in 2026.

In May 2026 the company raised EUR 1.6 million from Wake Up Capital, ELOKON Ventures and Innovatiefonds Noord-Holland, alongside a Eurostars grant co-funded by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, to expand product development and the software layer that converts raw sensor output into usable vehicle and robot inputs. At the time it reported more than a dozen proof-of-concept projects running with automakers and Tier-1 suppliers.
