US agri-robotics company founded 2016 in Hayward CA; developed autonomous apple-harvesting robots with vacuum end-effectors; ceased operations 2021.
Abundant Robotics was a Hayward, California-based agricultural robotics company founded in 2016 as a spinout of SRI International. The company developed an autonomous apple-harvesting robot that used computer vision to identify ripe fruit and a vacuum-based end-effector to pick apples from trees at a rate of approximately one apple every two seconds. The system was designed to reach 50 to 90 percent of fruit on standard orchard trees.
Abundant partnered with New Zealand apple grower T&G Global for small-scale commercial trials. The company raised approximately $12 million in total funding, including a $10 million Series A in 2017. It operated on a Robotics-as-a-Service model, owning and operating robots during harvest seasons.
Abundant ceased operations in June 2021, citing inability to achieve market traction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its intellectual property was subsequently acquired by Wavemaker Labs.
